Spray Foam Overview
Spray foam is made up of two liquid chemicals which react when mixed to create a highly effective insulating product.
By design, it expands on contact and conforms to the space where it is applied. In addition to being an excellent insulator, certain spray foams can also serve as a moisture barrier, vapor barrier, and air barrier.
Where can this service be applied?
Different types of spray foam can be applied in various locations, some of which include:
- Wall assemblies (above and/or below grade)
- Attic/Roof deck assemblies
- Floor systems (joist cavities)
- Crawlspaces
- Foundation walls (interior and/or exterior)
- Beneath concrete slabs (pre-construction)
- And more!
Why is this important?
While there are many options to choose from during construction, the efficiency of your building materials is arguably the most important element (yes, we’re biased). A highly efficient structure promotes the following:
- Lower utility/service costs
- Environmental comfort (less temperature swings)
- Increased efficiency of mechanical components (HVAC systems, boilers, etc.)
- Indoor air quality
- And most importantly… health and wellbeing!
For many scenarios, spray foam is an excellent product choice that can provide some of the following:
- Mold deterrent
- Air tight seal
- Moisture and vapor barrier
- Sound transmission control
- Structural rigidity
- Thermal longevity
It is important to note that not all spray foams are created equal. It is important to choose an installer that uses material that has undergone proper testing and quality control measures. As previously mentioned, spray foam is science! It requires dedicated measures to ensure proper application.
While it is outside of services offered, we also believe in the importance of a mechanically controlled air exchange system. When considering insulation, you may have heard it said that “your home needs to breathe.” This is true, and we completely agree. That said, however, we believe in creating a highly efficient and air-tight environment with the ability to mechanically control the rate of air exchange, as opposed to purposefully creating a “leaky” environment.
